Making flowers and plants part of your Christmas decorations and celebrations is a clever move. They’re usually more eco-friendly than plastic alternatives, they bring the best of nature indoors (ideal when we all need a boost in the cold, grey months), they can smell wonderful, and they’re pretty effortless –  after all, you don’t need to untangle a poinsettia!

So, Christmas flowers – where do you start? Well that’s what this guide is here for. In it we’ll cover the best flowers for Christmas (including which are traditional Christmas flowers), the different ways to use them in your decorating, and some care tips for making sure they’re happy through the festivities.

Decide your decorating style before you choose blooms

If your choosing blooms for your home first have a think about what kind of style your going for this season. Chic and minimal? Classic traditional? Scandi minimalism? If you have a theme to work from it’ll really help guide your decisions. Likewise, if you’re buying for someone else have a think about their style or how their home is decorated or if they have any favourite colours and then let that guide what you choose for them.

Whether you’re looking for festive flowers to brighten your own home, a thoughtful Christmas flower gift, or inspiration for your seasonal decorating, the right blooms can bring colour, fragrance and a little extra magic to the celebrations. From classic reds and greens to softer winter-inspired shades, there are plenty of Christmas flower ideas to suit every style.

Popular Christmas flower styles can range from timeless festive arrangements filled with rich reds and greenery to more modern designs with soft whites, silvery foliage and natural textures. Choosing a style first can help you find flowers that feel right for the person you’re gifting them to, or the space you’re bringing them into.

Popular Christmas flower types

Traditional Christmas flowers and foliage

Traditional Christmas flowers often feature rich reds, whites and greens, with blooms and foliage that have become closely associated with the festive season. Popular choices include amaryllis, red roses, chrysanthemums, poinsettias and seasonal greenery such as spruce, pine and holly.

Going for classic Christmas decorations? Opt for iconic festive colours like rich reds and forest greens with pops of gold. You’ll be wanting flowers like amaryllis and red roses or chrysanthemums, mixed with foliage like spruce, pine and holly. Pinecones could feature too, or dried foliage painted gold. Don’t forget, if you’d like a florist to take care of the blooms, we can help.

For a classic festive bouquet with plenty of seasonal character, The Festive Forest bouquet combines Christmas foliage and flowers in a traditional hand-tied design.

Modern Christmas flowers and foliage

Choosing a fresher look this year? Maybe something Scandinavian or minimal? Opt for softer and lighter colour flowers and silvery foliage. Think white roses and amaryllis, eucalyptus, Christmas rose, and dried flowers and foliage for lots of texture. For instance, this year our on trend festive flowers are all themed around a winter woodland.

If you prefer a more contemporary take on Christmas flowers, look for softer tones, natural textures and winter-inspired details. This year our on trend festive flowers are all themed around a winter woodland.

Seasonal Christmas flowers

Winter is nature’s time of scarcity, so finding flowers that bloom in the cold winter months can be a tricky task. The rich red flowers we’re used to, and most iconic winter plants, will be grown intensively in greenhouses or imported. But if you’d like to keep the carbon footprint of your Christmas decorations low and opt for more sustainable Christmas flowers, then you do have a few options.

Beautiful snowdrops pop out in winter and will last a few days in a vase, as will winter-flowering clematis and Christmas roses (aka hellebores). Our florists always try to use seasonal flowers, but if you want to guarantee sustainable Christmas flowers your best bet is to get growing yourself.

When choosing flowers for Christmas, think about the colours and textures that capture the feeling you want to create. Traditional festive arrangements often use deep reds, greens and whites, while more modern designs can include softer winter tones, dried flowers and unusual foliage that create a more subtle look.

Popular plants for Christmas

Christmas plants can make lovely additions to festive displays and can be a fresh alternative to cut flowers. Plants can continue bringing colour and joy long after the celebrations are over, making them thoughtful gifts as well as beautiful decorations.

Explore Christmas plants

Poinsettia

The most iconic of all winter flora. Their classic contrasting red and green look is thanks to their striking star-like bracts (like a flowery leaf), with the actual flowers of the poinsettia plant hidden within the foliage.

If you’re looking for something a little fresher, poinsettias are also grown in shades of pink and white. However, while beautiful, these plants are mildly toxic to pets, so may not be the best idea if you’re sharing Christmas with some furry friends.

Christmas cactus

Yes, we said cactus! This unique flowering succulent makes for an eye-catching alternative to traditional red-petaled festive flora. This plant’s flowers bloom in spectacular shades of white, pink, and red, providing a bright contrast to the deep green cactus itself.

Incredibly long lasting with the right TLC (some have been said to last up to 100 years!), it makes for a great gift and can flower twice in a year, so they won’t just get joyful blooms at Christmas.

Find out more about this festive favourite in our Christmas cactus guide, including how to care for it and help it thrive beyond the festive season.

Ways to use flowers and plants in Christmas decorations

Christmas wreaths

We are absolutely unbiased of course, but we don’t think it’s Christmas without a fresh flower and foliage wreath. Whether they’re bringing joy to the street on the front door, or making you feel merry indoors somewhere, they’re an iconic symbol of winter. The shape symbolises eternity, the continuing of life – a reminder we all need in the stark chill of winter.

If you’re making one yourself, check out our guide to making a Christmas wreath and be sure to use a moss or natural base to be kinder to the plant. And of course, if you’d rather leave it to an expert, our florists can craft all sorts of gorgeousness to hang on the door.

A Christmas wreath is also a beautiful way to showcase traditional festive flowers and foliage. Add seasonal touches like berries, pinecones, dried flowers or eucalyptus to create a design that feels personal to your home.

Christmas centrepieces

Christmas dinner is definitely the star of the Christmas table, but we want the setting to do it justice. Simple and subtle is the motto for Christmas table flower decorations, as you don’t want it to be too crowded with all the delicious food.

With this in mind, try wrapping delicate flowers around the necks of wine glasses and drop a few sprigs of fresh holly and rose petals here and there. If you want to go bolder, create a floral centrepiece that complements your tree and the rest of your decorations.

Red roses are always a Christmas classic, while white amaryllis and azaleas can help to uplift the room. You can also arrange the blooms around beautiful candles in a ring design – just be sure no one is reaching over them to get to the roasties!

Christmas garlands

A garland is really just a very long, windy wreath! We love them on a mantelpiece or wound around the stairs. And while plastic might be more convenient, it can’t match the fresh scent and beauty of a real garland (nor its sustainability).

The classic poinsettia was born to take centre stage in garlands, while hints of crisp white azaleas create perfect snowy accents. If you fancy something a little different, rose garlands entwined with eucalyptus leaves make for a modern, minimal choice.

A fresh Christmas garland is another lovely way to bring flowers and foliage into your festive décor. Layer seasonal greenery with flowers, berries and dried decorations to create a display that feels unique to your home.

Christmas flower baubles

For stunning, natural Christmas tree flower decorations, curl seasonal leaves and foliage into clear glass baubles, dappled with delicate white gypsophila to create contained miniature winter wonderlands. Or pack them with striking red rose heads to accent the green of the tree needles.

You can also use dried flowers on your tree (just keep them away from any hot lights). Check out our guide to drying flowers for the basics on flower drying.

Flower baubles are a simple way to add smaller floral details throughout your home. They work especially well when you want to bring in Christmas flowers without taking up extra space.

Christmas flower gift tags

If you’d like to take your festive wrapping to the next level, floral gift tags are your answer. Grab your glue gun (or some Mod Podge), sprigs of dried foliage and flowers, and some little kraft tags and get sticking.

Or avoid the glue altogether and use wire or string to tie sprigs to your parcels. Simple but effective, floral gift tags take prezzies to the next level.

Christmas bouquets

Looking for a more subtle, elegant route than shedloads of garlands and twinkling lights? Christmas bouquets might be your answer. Depending on whether you’re looking for something more traditional or modern, each bouquet can be created to suit individual rooms or perhaps a running interior theme.

Deep reds and greens are the go-to colours for a classic festive feel, with amaryllis brightening up any winter bouquet, surrounded by complementary holly berries, fir and fern. For something a little more delicate, try placing draping vases of wisteria or a stunning display of dried gypsophila, thistles and wildflowers. If you get stuck, our florists can always help.

Christmas bouquets also make thoughtful gifts when you want to send someone a little festive joy. Choose a traditional arrangement filled with rich seasonal colours, or opt for a more modern design inspired by winter landscapes and softer tones.

When choosing Christmas flowers for someone else, think about their home, personality and favourite colours. A thoughtful bouquet feels even more special when it reflects the person receiving it.

How to keep Christmas flowers fresh

With the right care, Christmas bouquets can continue looking beautiful throughout the festive season. Place your flowers in clean water, trim the stems before arranging them and keep them away from direct heat sources such as radiators and fireplaces.

Remove any fading flowers or leaves as needed, and refresh the water regularly to help your bouquet last as long as possible.

The lifespan of a Christmas bouquet will depend on the flowers used, but many arrangements can last for a week or more when cared for properly.

Christmas flower FAQs

Traditional Christmas flowers are usually associated with rich festive colours like red, white and green. Popular choices include amaryllis, poinsettias, red roses, chrysanthemums and seasonal foliage such as holly, spruce and pine.

These flowers and plants have become linked with Christmas because of their colours, textures and ability to bring a warm, festive feel into homes during the winter months.

There isn’t one single official Christmas flower recognised everywhere, but poinsettias are often considered one of the most iconic festive plants thanks to their bright red leaves and traditional Christmas colouring. Amaryllis, Christmas roses (hellebores) and red roses are also strongly associated with the season.

The best Christmas flowers depend on the style you’re looking for. For a traditional bouquet, choose rich reds, festive greenery and seasonal flowers like amaryllis or roses. For something more modern, look for softer winter tones, eucalyptus, dried flowers and textured foliage.

A thoughtful Christmas bouquet can be tailored to suit the person receiving it, whether they love classic festive colours or something a little more unusual.

Many Christmas bouquets can last for a week or longer with the right care, although the exact lifespan depends on the flowers used. Keeping them in fresh water, trimming stems and placing them away from heat sources will help them stay beautiful for longer.

Refresh the water regularly, remove any fading flowers and keep your bouquet away from direct sunlight, radiators and other sources of heat. Following the care advice for your specific flowers will help you enjoy them throughout the festive season.
